The View from Graham
What's Going On?

Caber tossGraham Fire & Rescue regularly makes appearances at community events. Parades, festivals, scouting events, school tours and senior programs are among the many different kinds of events and programs attended by Graham Fire & Rescue.

Graham Fire & Rescue joins the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and teaches seniors about various services available. We are now offering the "File for Life" a plastic holder with a magnet for the refrigerator for medical information for the entire family - in easy reach in case of a medical emergency.

Graham Fire & Rescue would like to attend your event. Please give us two weeks advance notice for attendance. The event also must be held within the service district. Please call Myra Merdian-Drake at the department office for further information.

Great Escape Contest:
In 1998, a house fire claimed the lives of two family members. There were no smoke alarms and no escape plan. Fire and rescue teams were deeply upset and tried to devise a way to teach families about fire safety. Graham Fire & Rescue, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Puyallup Fire Department devised the Great Escape Contest. The contest is offered to 5th graders.

Starting each January, kids are taught about fire safety for their families with a video and live presentation. Then each child is asked to draw and practice with their family, an escape plan which includes two ways out of every room, a nearby meeting place outside of the home and locations of smoke alarms.

All drawings are judged and nine winners (one from each elementary school) are chosen. The winners receive tickets for themselves and two family members to the Puyallup Spring Fair and all winners ride in fire engines in the Daffodil Parade.

Daffodil Parade:
The Grand Floral Street Parade is the highlight of Daffodil Festival week. The parade travels through the four cities of Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting and consists of approximately 40 float entries and over 80 other entries, including bands, drill teams and horseback groups. The floats are decorated with fresh-cut daffodils, numbering in the thousands.

Graham Fire & Rescue always enters and drives an engine in the parade. The winners of the Great Escape Contest win the right to ride the engines during the parade. The Daffodil Festival will be celebrating it's 74th year during the 2007 season.

Fire Safety Tip

Trapped: In a fire, if you cannot get out of your room, close all doors between you and the fire. Stuff clothes in the cracks around the door to prevent smoke from entering. Signal from a window with a flashlight or something bright colored. If possible, call 911 and notify them of your location. More Safety Tips >
